The Burden of Parenthood

To the men and women in their 20’s and 30’s: I know society paints a picture of parenthood as a burden, something to put off as long as possible. Something to “prepare for”.

Truth is, a lifetime of preparation won’t be enough.

They’ll challenge you in ways you didn’t know you needed. They’ll make you feel vulnerable in a way you haven’t felt in a long time (or ever).

But my goodness, are they the love you didn’t know your heart was aching for. The refinement of your character you had no idea was overdue. The entertainment that feeds your soul tenfold. The inspiration that drives you so much further than any personal desire.

A 2022 study on happiness found that married mothers reported the highest levels of happiness among women.

Children are a gift. They force us to live for the wellbeing of another. They remind us of the significance of the eternal realm. They are a source of accountability in our daily words and actions.

Society may view that as a burden.

Let us be reminded that it is a blessing.
